In order to keep from going broke, I'll be keeping full spending details while on the road. My only hard caps are $2000 for pre-trip expenses, $5000 for flights, and $20000 for on the ground spending ($30-$80/day, depending on the country, including visas). My pre-trip expenses (in detail in the packing section) ended up around $2000, and I'll spend quite a bit under 5 for flights and visas since most of my flight segments will be on an American/oneworld frequent flyer ticket - and in business class at that! I'll be updating this section as I go.

In the table below, "other" means museum and park fees, newspapers, phone calls, internet cafes, shipping, etc. In general, this is a budget that allows for sleeping in a decent hostel (or cheaper hotel/private room if none is available), traveling 2nd class train or bus (taking the night bus when possible to save money), eating one restaurant meal per day plus snacks and street food, and not skipping good museums and parks because of the price. This budget does not really allow for activities, unless noted. Also note that all prices are in USD, and certainly would vary based on the exchange rate - at the Euro-USD exchange rate prevailing in October, my Portugal budget would have been $70.71 per day rather than $81.21! Indeed, the consensus "long-run" (meaning a few years from now) economists' prediction for the USD-Euro is about 1.2 - at this rate, Portugal would have cost $63 per day, and even France would have been $74, Would that the rest of the trip be under a still-strengthening dollar!
